This week’s Book Blogger Hop asks…

Do you prefer Nook, Kindle, other reader, or paper book?

Although I’ve had a Nook for about four years, I still tend to read an equal amount of ebooks and actual print books. I love both equally for very different reasons:

A Nook (or any other ereader) is great when you travel or commute a lot. Not having to lug around multiple books, or books that are more than 100 pages, is a huge plus. There have been countless times when I’ve finished a book mid-commute and if I didn’t have my Nook, I’d have to wait til I got home to start something new. With my ereader, I can just flip through my selections and pick my next read. And the decision to read an 800-page book is much less difficult when it can fit neatly in my bag without tipping me over. Aside from the convenience factor, I also love that it’s hard to tell what you’re reading since there’s no cover or spine to give it away. When I’m reading, particularly on a commute or trip, I prefer to not discuss the book with strangers (I just want to read; that’s why my head is in a book!). When carrying a print book, it all but opens the door for neighbors to comment on what you’re reading. (Ereaders are also great for hiding the fact that you’re reading a book you might be embarrassed to read…ahem, Fifty Shades of Grey.)

Of course, I love the good ol’ traditional print book too. Who doesn’t? The feel of the book in my hands is so substantial and I love the act of actually turning the page. Getting to place a bookmark between pages and see how far I’ve read gives me a great sense of accomplishment. And of course, those books are just so darn pretty! I love book covers and I think my apartment would be incredibly drab without my corner bookshelf with the eclectic, multicolored books. When people visit, they often peruse my shelves, mentioning books they’ve read and liked and inquiring about ones they haven’t heard of. While it’s still possible to flip through someone’s collection with an ereader, it’s not nearly as fun.  And even though it barely takes up space, the ereader certainly doesn’t look as nice on the shelf.
